Product description

If you would like to experience saffron from the planting stage, this pack contains 10 saffron bulbs for planting from Crocus sativus, known as Saffron Crocus. Its purple flowers open in autumn. At the centre of each flower are red stigmas, carefully harvested and dried to become the saffron threads used in cooking.

They are commonly sold as “saffron bulbs”, but botanically they are corms: underground storage organs similar to bulbs. This pack is for planting, not a pack of saffron threads ready to use.

Why choose saffron bulbs?

  • A growing experience combining an attractive autumn flower with the possibility of harvesting red saffron stigmas.
  • They can be planted in garden soil or a wide pot with drainage holes.
  • The pack contains 10 corms to plant as a group, with suitable space between them.

How to grow saffron in Jordan

  1. Choose a position in direct sun with loose, well-drained soil. For pots, use a container with drainage holes and a growing mix that does not retain water for too long.
  2. Plant the corms in late summer or during September and October after the heat eases, with the pointed end facing upwards.
  3. Set each corm around 10–15 cm deep, leaving approximately 10 cm between corms.
  4. Water the soil after planting, then maintain moderate moisture without flooding. Standing water can cause corm rot.
  5. When flowers appear, gently harvest the long red stigmas from the centre of the flower, not the yellow stamens. Dry the threads gently and store in an airtight container away from light.

Please note: Flowering time and flower count depend on corm size, weather and care; flowering may be delayed in the first season. Leave the foliage after flowering until it yellows and dries naturally to help the corms replenish their reserves.

Frequently asked questions about saffron bulbs

Does the pack contain saffron ready to eat?

No. It contains 10 corms for growing the plant. The parts harvested for food use are the red flower stigmas, after the flowers open and the stigmas are dried. The corms must not be eaten.

Can saffron be grown in a pot?

Yes, in a wide, deep pot with drainage holes, leaving around 10 cm between corms and placing it in direct sunlight.

When should I plant saffron bulbs?

Plant in late summer or during September and October after the summer heat eases. They usually flower in autumn, though flowering may be delayed in the first season.

What planting depth and spacing should I use?

Plant the corms approximately 10–15 cm deep, leaving around 10 cm between them.

Will each bulb give me a fixed amount of saffron?

There is no guaranteed flower count or harvest weight per corm. Each saffron flower has three red stigmas, and a small quantity of dried threads requires many flowers.

What should I do with the leaves after flowering?

Leave them until they yellow and dry naturally; keeping them helps the corms grow for the following season.
