Product description

Dramatic colour among spring flowers

Queen of Night tulips add deep purple-maroon tones to a flower bed. They can look almost black in shade, revealing a purple sheen when the petals catch the light. Their elegant cup-shaped flowers and tall stems make the five-bulb pack suitable for a small group in a wide pot or a patch of colour in the garden. They create a particularly attractive contrast beside white tulips or other pale flowers. A few stems can also be cut for a simple arrangement once the buds begin to show colour.

English name: Queen of Night Tulip. Botanical name: Tulipa 'Queen of Night'. This variety belongs to the Single Late group, meaning single tulips that flower relatively late within the spring season. The Royal Horticultural Society describes its flowers as deep purple to maroon, with a height of around 60 cm in suitable conditions. The visible colour, stem height and actual flowering time in Jordan may vary with cold, light and the season.

Where to plant in Jordan

Choose a sunny site with well-drained soil and plant after the weather cools in autumn or early winter. It suits flower beds and deep pots with drainage holes and can be placed behind shorter spring plants so its dark flowers stand out. Growth timing and flowering duration may change in warm regions, so there is no guaranteed flowering date.

Planting and care steps

  1. Prepare loose, well-drained soil. In pots, do not leave water in the saucer and choose enough depth for the roots and bulbs.
  2. Plant each bulb pointed end upwards, around 10–15 cm deep, leaving approximately 8–10 cm between bulbs in the ground. Avoid allowing bulbs to touch in pots.
  3. Water after planting, then maintain moderate moisture during growth without flooding. Choose a position relatively sheltered from strong winds for the tall flower stems.
  4. Once flowering ends, remove faded flowers and leave the foliage to yellow naturally before removing it. Equally strong flowering may not return the following season, especially at sites with warm winters.

Calling it “black” refers to its dark visual appearance; its actual flower colour is deep purple-maroon. The bulbs are ornamental, not edible, and may irritate sensitive skin. Wear gloves if needed and keep away from children and pets. The front-of-pack image provides no confirmed information about pre-chilling.

Frequently asked questions

How many bulbs are included, and what is the price? The original Queen of Night pack contains 5 bulbs for 3 JOD per pack.

Are the flowers truly black? They look very dark, but their colour is closer to deep purple-maroon, changing in appearance between shade and sunlight.

Does it flower early? It belongs to the relatively late-flowering Single Late tulip group. Timing in Jordan varies with the region and weather.

How tall does it grow? Around 60 cm in suitable conditions, with actual height varying according to growing conditions.

Can I grow it in a pot? Yes, if the pot is deep and wide, has drainage holes and allows enough space between bulbs.

How can I highlight its colour in the garden? Plant it in a group beside white or pale flowers with a green background. The contrast is particularly clear in gentle natural light.

Can the flowers be cut? Yes, it is also grown for cut flowers. Cut when the bud shows colour and leave enough foliage if you want to keep the bulb.

Will the bulbs flower again next year? They may return, but equally strong flowering is not guaranteed. Leave the foliage to yellow and provide well-drained soil.
