Product description

Charentais Melon: Sweet Flavour and a Distinctive Fragrance

Charentais is a French melon known for its sweet flavour, distinctive aroma, orange flesh and juicy texture. It is an excellent summer fruit for anyone who enjoys fresh, naturally sweet produce.

1. Growing Charentais Melons

  • Soil preparation: Choose light, fertile, well-drained soil. Add organic compost and cultivate to a depth of 30–40 cm.
  • Sowing: Sow after the risk of frost has passed and the soil is warm. Plant seeds 2–3 cm deep, leaving 1–1.5 m between plants, then water gently.
  • Watering: Water regularly, especially during early growth. Reduce watering as the fruit begins to develop.
  • Feeding: Use a balanced fertiliser such as NPK 20-20-20 initially, then a fertiliser rich in potassium and phosphorus during fruiting.
  • Support: Stakes or trellises help keep fruit off the soil.
  • Weeding: Remove weeds regularly to limit competition for water and nutrients.

2. Harvesting

Fruit is generally ready 70–90 days after planting. A hollow sound when tapped and easy separation from the stem are signs of ripeness.

3. Common Pests and Diseases

  • Aphids: controlled using products such as Prize or Symbaz.
  • Fruit flies: managed using traps or suitable insecticides.
  • Downy mildew: treated using Mycotan.

4. Additional Growing Tips

  • Provide 6–8 hours of sunlight daily.
  • A soil temperature of 25–30°C supports good growth.
  • Avoid overhead watering to reduce fungal disease.
  • Plant on raised mounds to improve drainage and protect the roots.

With suitable care and growing conditions, Charentais melons reward you with sweet, fragrant fruit for a refreshing summer harvest.
