Product description

Deep blue colour and a fragrance that welcomes spring

Blue Jacket hyacinth bulbs are a lovely choice for a striking display in a small space: upright spikes bear dark blue flowers with a deeper purple stripe on the petals, accompanied by the distinctive hyacinth fragrance. The closely packed flowers rise above glossy green leaves, looking attractive in a pot near the entrance or grouped along a garden border. The pack contains 3 bulbs of one variety, which can be planted together for a cohesive block of colour.

English name: Blue Jacket Hyacinth. Botanical name: Hyacinthus orientalis 'Blue Jacket'. Plants usually reach around 30 cm in suitable conditions. These are bulbs for planting, not ready-flowering plants. Flowering time and spike height depend on seasonal cold, the planting site and care.

Where to plant

Blue Jacket suits pots with drainage holes, flower beds and home gardens. Choose a sunny position, or bright light with some light shade, and loose, well-drained soil. In Jordan, begin planting when soil temperatures become milder in autumn and cooler weather arrives. Avoid leaving the pot in hot sun or waterlogged soil. Grouping the three bulbs in a suitable pot brings their colour and fragrance close to a seating area, provided there is enough room for roots and drainage.

How to plant the bulbs

  1. Prepare well-drained growing soil and a pot with holes in its base, or a garden position that does not hold standing water.
  2. Plant each bulb pointed end upwards, approximately 10 cm deep. Leave at least 7.5 cm between bulbs in the ground. They can be closer in a pot without touching, according to its size.
  3. Water after planting to moisten the soil, then when the soil needs it, without flooding or leaving standing water in the saucer.
  4. Keep the plant in a bright, relatively cool position while growing. Once flowers fade, remove the dry spike and leave the foliage to yellow naturally to feed the bulb.

Hyacinths need a suitable cold period before flowering. In sites with warm winters, or for indoor flowering, the bulbs may need an appropriate chilling treatment; do not assume they are pre-chilled. If the chilling status is not clear on the pack, ask Hedera before planning indoor forcing. Growth the following season is possible, but flowers may be less dense than in the first season.

Care note: Hyacinth bulbs are ornamental and must not be eaten. Wear gloves when handling them if your skin is sensitive, and keep away from children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

How many bulbs are in the pack? 3 Blue Jacket hyacinth bulbs.

Are the flowers really blue? This variety has dark blue flowers with a deeper purple stripe on the petals. Their appearance may vary slightly with light and the stage of flowering. The planting guide image is a general illustration, not an image of this variety's colour.

Are they fragrant? Yes, this variety has the floral scent associated with hyacinths. Place the pot near an entrance or well-ventilated seating area to enjoy it.

Can I grow them in a balcony pot in Jordan? Yes, with drainage holes, soil that does not become waterlogged and a bright position away from extreme heat. Plant when the autumn weather begins to become milder.

What planting depth and spacing should I use? Around 10 cm deep, pointed end upwards, with at least 7.5 cm between bulbs in the garden. Do not overcrowd bulbs in a pot or let them touch.

When do they flower? Hyacinths usually flower in spring after their required cold period. The actual timing depends on the region, seasonal temperatures and whether the bulbs have received enough chilling.

Must the bulbs be chilled before planting? This depends on how cold the planting site is and the intended use, particularly for indoor flowering. There is no confirmed information that they are prepared or pre-chilled, so check the pack's status before giving it a specific chilling treatment.

Will they flower again next year? They may return if the foliage is left to yellow and the bulbs are kept in suitable conditions, although the flower spikes may be less full than in the first season.
