Growing Courgettes at Home — A Productive, Easy-Care Vegetable

1. About the plant

Courgettes are fast-growing summer vegetables with tasty fruit and are easy to grow in home gardens. They can be planted directly in the ground or in large containers.

2. Step-by-step growing guide

Soil preparation

  • Courgettes prefer well-drained light loamy or sandy soil.
  • Work the soil to a depth of 20–30 cm and add organic fertiliser before planting.
  • A soil pH of 6.0–7.0 is preferable for optimum growth.

Sowing

  • Sow directly into the soil at a depth of 2–3 cm.
  • Leave 50–70 cm between plants for good growth and adequate ventilation.
  • Choose a sunny site with 6–8 hours of sunlight daily.

Plant care

  • Watering: water regularly to keep the soil moist without saturation.
  • Feeding: use a nitrogen-rich fertiliser initially, then one containing phosphorus and potassium once flowering starts.
  • Mulching: mulch around plants to retain moisture and reduce weeds.
  • Weeding: clear weeds regularly to maintain plant health.

Harvest

  • Courgettes can be harvested 40–50 days after planting.
  • Pick fruit at 15–20 cm long for the best taste and texture.
  • Harvest regularly to encourage further fruit production.

3. Common pests and problems

  • Aphids: can be controlled with pesticides available from Hedera Garden Store, such as PRIZE or Symbaz.
  • Powdery mildew: treated with Mycotan.
  • Whiteflies: reduce their spread with yellow sticky traps or a PRIZE spray.

4. Additional growing tips

  • March to August is the best planting period for good production.
  • A sunny location promotes growth and production.
  • Prune old or diseased leaves to improve ventilation and reduce disease risk.
  • Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.

Courgettes are easy, productive vegetables for home gardens. Good watering, feeding and weed control can provide an abundant, fresh harvest throughout the season.
