Promoting Vegetative Growth

Nitrogen drives vegetative growth. It is part of chlorophyll and proteins, and deficiency appears as yellowing older leaves, poor growth and thin shoots.

For leafy crops, nursery plants and plants after pruning, high-nitrogen formulations such as 30-10-10 and 28-14-14 produce a clear response in colour and size. Urea 46% is an economical option for soil application at carefully measured rates, while liquid nitrogen fertilizers are easier to use through drip irrigation.

Hedera's advice: split the dose over time instead of applying one large amount, water after soil application, and stop high-nitrogen feeding as flowering begins.

Which fertilizer should I use to increase leaves and vegetative growth?

Use a high-nitrogen formulation such as 30-10-10 or 28-14-14, carefully measured soil applications of 46% urea, or liquid nitrogen fertilizer with irrigation water. Foliar application gives a faster response when plants show yellowing and weak growth.

When should I stop using a high-nitrogen fertilizer?

Before flowering and fruit set. Excess nitrogen at this stage promotes vegetative growth at the expense of production, so switching to a balanced formulation or one high in phosphorus and potassium is preferable.
