Anthurium care guide

Light

Provide bright, indirect light to support strong growth and encourage new flower heads. It can adapt to medium light, but insufficient light may reduce flowering. Keep it out of direct midday sun, which can scorch the leaves and fade the red spathes.

Watering

Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil has dried. Water thoroughly until excess drains from the pot, then empty the saucer or decorative planter. Do not let the soil remain completely dry for long, and avoid leaving the roots in waterlogged soil.

Humidity

Anthurium prefers moderate to high humidity. Keep it away from direct air-conditioning or heater airflow. A humidifier or pebble tray can help raise humidity around it, provided the bottom of the pot does not touch the water.

Soil and drainage

Use a light, organic-rich houseplant mix with good aeration and drainage. Heavy mixes that retain water for too long may damage the roots.

Temperature

A temperature of approximately 18–27°C suits this plant. Protect it from cold, draughts and sudden temperature changes.

Feeding

Apply a diluted balanced fertiliser or one for flowering plants every 4–6 weeks during active growth. Reduce feeding in winter, and do not fertilise completely dry soil.

Cleaning and pruning

Gently wipe the leaves with a soft, damp cloth to preserve their natural shine. Remove yellow leaves and old flower heads close to the base with a clean tool. Avoid commercial leaf-shine products and do not allow water to collect on the spathes.

How to encourage flowering

Provide strong, indirect light, balanced watering without waterlogging, and moderate feeding during the growing season. Insufficient light and overwatering are common reasons for fewer new flower heads.

Where to place it

  • On a side table beside the sofa
  • On a well-lit console in the entrance hall
  • On a spacious desk or reception table
  • Near a window behind a sheer curtain
  • In a bright living-room corner
  • As a gift for special occasions and visits

Children and pets

Anthurium contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing it may cause mouth irritation and pain, drooling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach of children, cats and dogs, and wash your hands after handling cut plant parts.

Hedera tip

If the leaves look healthy but the plant has stopped producing flower heads, check the light before increasing fertiliser. Anthurium often needs stronger indirect light more than extra feeding.

Frequently asked questions

Is the red part the flower?

The glossy red part is a coloured spathe. The true flowers are very small and grow on the yellow spadix in the centre.

Can I keep Anthurium in a bedroom?

Yes, if the room receives indirect natural light and has moderate ventilation. Keep the plant away from children and pets.

How often should I water it?

This depends on temperature, light and how quickly the soil dries. Check the top 2–3 cm and water when this layer starts to dry, rather than following a fixed schedule.

Why are the leaf tips turning brown?

Dry air, salt build-up or irregular watering may be responsible. Use low-salt water where possible and maintain balanced moisture without waterlogging.

Does it need direct sun to flower?

No. It needs strong light, but intense direct sun can scorch the leaves and spathes. Bright, filtered light is best.

Should I repot it immediately?

There is no need to repot on arrival. Keep it in the nursery pot while drainage is good. Once the roots fill the pot, move up just one pot size.
