Areca Palm care

Light

Choose a well-lit spot with bright, indirect light. It can adapt to medium light, but good light supports better growth and fuller foliage.

Avoid direct midday sun through glass, which can scorch the leaves and cause dry patches.

Watering

Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil has dried, then water thoroughly until excess drains from the pot.

Do not leave the pot standing in water or follow a fixed watering schedule. Water needs change with temperature, light and season.

Humidity

Areca prefers moderate to high humidity. Keep it away from air conditioners and dry draughts, especially in summer or when heating is running in winter.

Soil and drainage

Use a light houseplant mix that drains well and allows air to reach the roots. Ensure the pot has drainage holes and avoid heavy soil that stays wet for long periods.

Temperature

Approximately 18–28°C is ideal. Protect it from severe cold and sudden temperature changes.

Feeding

Apply a diluted balanced fertiliser approximately every 4 weeks in spring and summer. Reduce or stop feeding in winter when growth slows.

Cleaning and pruning

Gently remove dust from the fronds and cut fully dried leaves near the base. If only a leaf tip is dry, trim the brown part while preserving the natural leaf shape.

Why do Areca leaf tips turn brown?

Brown tips can result from low humidity, leaving the soil dry too long or salt build-up. Low-salt water and occasional thorough watering to flush the soil help reduce accumulated salts.

Hedera tip

Check the soil rather than counting watering days. Insert a finger several centimetres into the soil; if it is still moist, wait before watering. This simple check reduces the risk of overwatering and root problems.

Where to place it

  • Beside the sofa in a living room.
  • Near a window with indirect light.
  • In a bright entrance hall.
  • In offices and reception areas.
  • In an empty corner that needs a medium-sized green feature.

Is Areca suitable around pets?

Areca Palm is generally classified as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Even so, discourage pets from chewing the leaves to avoid digestive upset or damage to the plant.

Frequently asked questions

Does Areca tolerate low light?

It can survive in medium light, but very low light may slow growth and reduce frond density. A position near indirect natural light is best.

How often should I water Areca?

There is no fixed schedule for every home. Water after the top 3–5 cm of soil dries; the interval may change between summer and winter.

Can I place it in front of a window?

Yes, as long as the light is indirect or a sheer curtain protects the leaves from strong sun.

Does it need a larger pot on arrival?

No. Keep it in the current nursery pot while the plant is settled and drainage is good. Move to a slightly larger pot only when the roots fill it.

How does it differ from the 120 cm Areca?

The 100 cm version is easier to place in medium-sized spaces and corners near furniture. The 120 cm version adds more height and suits larger rooms and entrances.
