Dracaena Marginata Care

Light

Place in medium to bright, indirect light. It can adapt to medium light, but good lighting helps maintain balanced growth and clearer leaf colours.

Avoid direct midday sun, particularly through glass in summer, as it can scorch leaves and dry their tips.

Watering

Check the soil before each watering. Water when approximately the top 4–6 cm has dried. Add water until it begins to drain through the holes, then discard any water collected beneath the pot.

A fixed weekly schedule is not recommended: drying time varies with the season, light, room temperature, air conditioning and heating.

Note: Dracaena tolerates slight dryness better than waterlogged soil.

Temperature and Placement

Moderate home and office temperatures suit this plant. Keep it away from direct air-conditioning draughts, heaters and doors exposed to cold air.

In Jordan, keep it indoors during cold weather, with good natural light and protection from strong direct sun.

Humidity

It adapts to normal household humidity, although very dry air can cause brown leaf tips. Keep it away from hot air and wipe its leaves periodically with a damp cloth to maintain their appearance.

Soil and Drainage

Use a light, well-draining indoor potting mix and a pot with clear drainage holes. Avoid standing water around the roots and heavy soil that stays wet for long periods.

Feeding

Apply a balanced houseplant fertiliser every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer, following the dose on the label. Reduce or stop feeding in winter when growth slows.

Leaf Care and Shape

Gently wipe the leaves to remove dust and help them receive light. Rotate the pot a quarter turn approximately every two weeks for balanced light exposure.

Remove fully dried leaves, or trim brown tips with clean scissors, following the leaf's natural pointed shape.

Repotting

Repot when the roots become crowded or grow through the drainage holes. Choose a pot only one size larger; a much larger container can leave the soil wet for too long.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can it tolerate low light?

It can adapt to medium and relatively low light, but grows better and stays fuller in bright, indirect light. Very low light may slow growth and lead to a less balanced shape.

How often should I water it?

This depends on how quickly the soil dries. Check with your finger and water when the top 4–6 cm has dried, rather than following a fixed number of days.

Is it suitable for small rooms?

Yes. Its upright habit takes up less width than broad-leaved plants. At 100 cm tall, it fits beside furniture and in medium-sized corners.

Can I keep it in an office?

Yes, provided there is medium to bright, indirect natural light and it is kept away from direct air-conditioning airflow.

Why are the leaf tips turning brown?

Dry air, irregular watering, salt build-up in the soil, air-conditioning draughts or heater warmth may be responsible. Check these conditions before trimming damaged tips.

Is it safe for cats and dogs?

No. Keep it out of their reach and prevent pets from chewing its leaves.

Is the decorative pot pictured included?

No. The plant is supplied in a plastic nursery pot. The decorative pot in the lifestyle photograph is not included and can be purchased separately.
