Product description

Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as wild banana or giant white bird of paradise, is a banana-like plant with upright, woody stems. It can reach a mature height of 7–8 metres.

Light

Provide bright, indirect light. This plant can become very large and needs plenty of light to grow. It also needs plenty of light to flower indoors, which rarely happens. Aim for at least 6–8 hours of indirect sunlight each day. It can survive in lower light, but will grow more slowly and produce smaller leaves.

If moving your bird of paradise outdoors, acclimatise it by keeping it in shade for two weeks before moving it into full sun.

Watering

Let the top layer of soil dry before watering. Water thoroughly until excess water drains through the pot. Bright growing conditions can cause the soil to dry more quickly, so check it regularly and water as needed. Reduce watering in autumn and winter.

Temperature

Temperatures of 18–29°C suit this tropical plant. It dislikes cold conditions. If kept outside during warmer months, bring it indoors before night-time temperatures fall below 5°C.

Humidity

Strelitzia nicolai tolerates average humidity, but higher humidity supports growth. Place it in a naturally humid spot, or use a humidifier or a pebble tray with water.

Feeding

Apply a diluted complete liquid fertiliser every two weeks during the growing season. Alternatively, top-dress with a 1-inch layer of compost, gently working it into the surface of the soil before watering thoroughly. Additional nutrients help support this plant's growth.

Growth

Under suitable conditions, this is a fast-growing houseplant that can become taller than the ceiling.
