Alocasia Macrorrhizos — Elephant Ear

Alocasia macrorrhizos, also known as giant alocasia or giant elephant ear, has impressive, broad leaves shaped like an elephant's ears. Its bold appearance makes a striking feature indoors or outdoors. Available in many forms, this plant is relatively easy to grow.

Care

• Light: Indoors, provide bright, indirect light and protect the leaves from strong direct sun.
• Watering: During active growth, water when the top 5 cm of potting mix has dried. Allow excess water to drain, and reduce watering during winter dormancy.
• Soil: A mixture of soil, peat moss and perlite, with an acidic to neutral pH.
• Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing months.
• Pruning: Remove dead leaves and plant debris.
• Propagation: Propagate by separating offsets or dividing the rhizome in spring.
