Zamioculcas zamiifolia is native to East Africa. Its appearance combines features reminiscent of ferns, cycads and succulents, with upright stems carrying dark green leaves. It rarely flowers outside its native habitat, where it produces white and green flowers.
The ZZ plant is a good choice for beginners and anyone looking for a low-maintenance houseplant. Its resilience and adaptability make it popular in homes and workplaces, adding greenery with little care.
It thrives in a shaded position with bright, filtered light, away from direct sunlight. It also tolerates dimmer shaded locations, including bedrooms and other relatively low-light spaces.
Its minimum tolerated temperature is around 15–18°C, and it can also tolerate indoor temperatures up to 35°C. It handles drought well, but avoid prolonged dryness, which may weaken the stems and lead to leaf drop.
Water sparingly once the soil has dried. Feed monthly during summer. Over time, the plant can reach approximately 120 cm in height.
Propagate by dividing a larger plant into several sections and potting them separately. Leaf cuttings can also be placed in soil to form roots and eventually grow into new plants, although this method is very slow.
