Areca palms thrive in bright, indirect light. They can tolerate some direct sunlight, particularly in the morning or evening, but excessive direct sun can scorch the leaves. Place your palm near a window with filtered or indirect sunlight.
Areca palms prefer temperatures of 18–24°C. They can tolerate slightly cooler conditions, but avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 13°C (55°F).
Keep the soil evenly moist without waterlogging it. Allow the top 2.5 cm of soil to dry before watering again. Watering about once a week during the growing season and once every two weeks during dormancy is a general guideline. Adjust the frequency to the soil's moisture retention and growing conditions.
Areca palms appreciate humidity. Mist the foliage regularly, place a water tray near the plant or use a humidifier to increase humidity around it.
Use a loose, well-draining potting mix of peat moss, perlite and sand. It should retain moisture without becoming waterlogged.
Remove old, dead leaves by cutting them off carefully. Do not cut the tops of the stems to reduce the palm’s height.
Watch for common pests such as spider mites, mealybugs and scale insects. Treat infestations promptly with a suitable pest-control product or horticultural oil.
