Growing Turnips in Your Home Garden — A Fast-Growing, Nutritious Crop

1 - About the Plant

Turnips are root vegetables in the brassica family, with round or oval roots that may be white or purple. They grow quickly and can be used in salads, cooking and pickling. Their green leaves are also rich in nutrients.

2 - Step-by-Step Growing Guide

Preparing the Soil

  • Turnips need light, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
  • Loose soil without stones allows the roots to develop well.
  • Work the soil thoroughly and mix in organic fertiliser before planting.

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow directly into the soil, 1 cm deep, and cover with a light layer of soil.
  • Leave 10-15 cm between plants for good-sized roots.
  • Water immediately after sowing to maintain moisture and encourage germination.

Plant Care

  • Watering: Water regularly, 2-3 times a week, to keep the soil moist.
  • Feeding: A balanced fertiliser such as NPK 20-20-20 is recommended to support rapid growth.
  • Weeding: Remove weeds by hand to prevent competition for nutrients.

Harvesting

  • Harvest turnips 40-60 days after planting, when the roots reach a suitable size (5-10 cm).
  • Pull gently from the soil or use a gardening tool to lift the roots without damaging them.
  • The leaves can also be harvested for cooking or salads.

3 - Common Pests and Problems

  • Aphids: Treated with PRIZE insecticide, available at Hedera.
  • Whiteflies: Controlled with C-More insecticide to prevent their spread.
  • Powdery mildew: Treated with Mycotan, a fungicide effective against fungi.
  • Root-feeding worms: Can be controlled with Marlon M 3 to protect the crop.

4 - More Tips for Growing Turnips

  • Grow in mild or cool weather for better flavour and quality.
  • Choose a sunny site and avoid high temperatures, which may make the roots coarse.
  • Sow successive batches every two weeks for a continuous crop throughout the season.
  • Do not delay harvesting, as oversized roots become coarse and less tender.

Summary

Turnips are a fast-growing, nutritious crop that is easy to grow in a home garden. With suitable watering, feeding and pest management, they provide a fresh, flavourful harvest for many healthy dishes.
